Parks in Kolkata

Kolkata, the cultural capital of India, is also well known for its aesthetic city décor and beautifully designed parks. If you take a trip around the city, you will be stunned to see plenty of children parks and gardens, maintained by the Municipality of Kolkata. Some of the parks are in fact the reflection of ‘city of joy’s’ heritage and posh culture.

Maidan

Maidan, the biggest park of Kolkata, is located in the juncture of the city’s posh road, Race Course. Maidan, which literally means ‘field’ in Bengali, is skirted with skyscrapers and heritage buildings. Victoria Memorial Hall and Eden Gardens are at stone throwing distance from Maidan.

Nicco Park

In Salt Lake, you will find another stunning park, which is basically an amusement park. The park is often connoted as Disney Land of West Bengal because of its family recreation options and water games. The park was established in 1991 with a concept of offering educational recreation and fun activities. Nalban Boating Complex beside Nicco Park also offers boating and other water activities to the visitors.

Millennium Park

Millennium Park, another well spotted park lying on the eastern shore of River Ganga is a public park. The 2.5 Km stretched beautifully crafted park is a hot zone for couples as well as families. From Strand Road to Babughat, the entire park is packed with fun activities for children and joggers lane.

Rabindra Sarobar

The south Kolkata exhibit an artificial lake known as Rabindra Sarobar. Calcutta Improvement Trust (CIT) in the year 1920 felt the urge to convert the marshy land into a well developed lake and park. The lake has been named under the great poet, Rabindranath Tagore.

Alipore Zoological Gardens

How can we forget about the world class zoological garden, Alipore Zoo? During the British era (1876), the zoo was constructed to give pleasure to the citizen of Kolkata as well as to the people coming from outside states. The zoo built over an area of 46.5 acres is the shelter of huge number varied mammals and birds.

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden or Calcutta Botanical Garden

This exceptionally beautiful and striking botanical garden is the home for 12,000 species of plants. The garden was established in 1787, which is till now carrying the legacy of Kolkata.

Deshapriya Park

The southern Kolkata also has a beautiful park, where young children can get trained in cricket, tennis or football. The park just beside Priya Cinema Hall is also known for holding Durga Puja.

Mohar Kunja

Mohar Kunja, which was previously a citizen park, is now converted into a public urban park. The park, established in 2005 is well known for its musical fountains and unparallel aesthetic charm.

Central Park

On one edge of Kolkata, Salt Lake boasts for holding the second largest park of the city. The well maintained Central Park (Banabitan) is cordoned with government buildings and well maintained trees and gardens.

Besides these aforementioned parks in Kolkata, there are some more stunning amusement parks and children parks scattered all over the city.
